The Guardian XO is a full-body robotic exoskeleton designed to assist workers in factories and warehouses with tasks that require lifting heavy objects. The exoskeleton uses batteries, and its powerful motors allow it to augment a worker's strength without restricting freedom of movement.

History

Sarcos Technology & Robotics Corporation, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, has been developing powered exoskeletons and the robotic technologies that make them possible for decades. Investors in the company include Caterpillar, GE Ventures, Microsoft, and Schlumberger. In 2019, Sarcos unveiled the Guardian XO, a strength-multiplying exoskeleton. The company planned to start shipping its first batch of alpha units to customers (including both heavy industry and the U.S. military) in 2020. The company hopes that future XO versions will be able to walk outdoors over challenging terrain, through a foot of mud, and in the rain or snow.

Overview

Enables operator to lift and manipulate up to 200 pounds (90.7 kg) repeatedly. Battery is hot-swappable for continuous operation. Reduces operator's metabolic output and physical strain by offloading up to 100% of exoskeleton's weight during use. Joints not capable of exceeding human range of motion, so they can't bend or twist in a way that would injure the operator. "Hands-free" mode allows operator to lock the suit's arms and simultaneously complete dexterous tasks requiring human hands, while carrying a heavy load. (Speed is for operator in the exoskeleton walking at average walking pace.)
