History

After HRP-1, HRP-2, HRP-3, HRP-4, and HRP-4C, Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) introduced HRP-5P in 2018. HRP-5P stands out from previous models in the HRP series of robots because it's much stronger and more autonomous. In a demonstration, the robot locates, lifts, and carries a large drywall panel on its own. The AIST team, led by Fumio Kanehiro, say HRP-5P is designed to "autonomously perform heavy labor or work in hazardous environments." They plan to use the robot as an R&D platform for practical application of humanoids in both research labs and industry.
